Return To Play

When students get injured, they should have a timeline for return. Learn how to set a date for when they should return to play, right on the roll!

What is Return to Play?

Schools have a duty of care to ensure injured students aren't participating in activities before they're medically ready. When a student is injured and the Incident is reported in Clipboard, a 'return to play' date can be set. This date indicates when the student will recover from the injury and return to their extracurricular activities.

Instead of adding Pre-Explained Absences for students who are injured but still attending school or other extracurricular Activities, it is preferable to use the Return to Play feature as part of the Incident follow-up. This way, students won't appear as 'potentially absent' on all rolls — instead, they'll show as 'unable to play due to injury (or concussion).' This allows staff in other extracurricular Activities to mark the student as unexplained absent if they do not attend.

What does it look like?

Once a return to play date has been set, an injury alert symbol (bandaid icon) will appear on the student's profile on any roll they are on.

When the symbol is clicked, it will show details of why the student is unable to play and when they should be expected to recover.

Concussion icon

When an Incident is logged with a concussion and a return-to-play date is set, a concussion-specific icon will appear on the Roll and Teams pages — separate from the standard band-aid icon. This makes it immediately clear to coaches and staff that the student has a Potential or Confirmed Concussion, so the right precautions can be taken to fulfil your school's duty of care — without any guesswork.

How can this be useful?

  • Help plan for upcoming Sessions and Fixtures by being able to see which students are unable to play due to injury.

  • Provide clear communication to staff of injuries, including whether a student has a concussion.

  • Helps your school fulfil its duty of care to injured students.
